Music Video Analysis 1
The Prodigy – Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix)
This video is mainly a narrative with very little performance. The narrative is strange, and although the scenes are cut to the beat of the track, it could be said that the narrative has nothing to do with the song or in fact its title. The genre of the track is dance/house. And the video has a small amount of conventional features making it an original piece in its own way. There is a crowd of young adults running through an urban area. Blindfolded, with other men taking bets suggesting there is a race going on. There is also an old man taking pictures of the runners, but little is revealed about him connoting mystery and danger.
There are plenty of close ups of the mysterious man showing there is something being hidden about his character. The fact that the other people in the video are consistently in a group suggests they are not of great importance as individuals. However at the end of the video, a woman from the crowd emerges as a winner, and the group remove their blindfolds to find their fellow runners have collided with obstacles and fallen unlucky, this marks the end of the video. The beats are in perfect unison with the cuts in the video making typical of how music videos are produced.
The music speed is based on the tune because the track builds up and as the this happens the music and performance get faster. For example the people start running when the music drops at its fastest point. The camera work is clever because when the people are running it is as if the cameraman is running too, the camera is not shaky but is certainly moving. The camera is kept steady for the rest of the shots. The song is called ‘Voodoo People’ because it appears that the people running are being controlled. The lighting used throughout is kept quite dark which connotes mystery and gives an eerie effect. This also hides the characters true colours, keeping the audience intrigued.
This particular video is the Pendulum remix to the song, which gives it more of a beat and dance-like effect. The original video caused a lot of controversy because in the video there were real witch doctors and a real voodoo priest, which deemed horrific and too offensive to be shown. The music video is based on a scene from the Spanish film ‘Intacto’, which was themed around luck games and chance.
