Ideas and Thoughts

Ideas and Thoughts

As a group, we have not fully yet decided on the song we are going to create a video too, however, we have decided that we are going to go for a more unconventional style of video. By this we mean we are aiming to create a video that interests the audience, with strange elements and unnerving ideas. We did think about creating a professional-looking, conventional music video, as this could achieve a high mark if done well, but we felt there were more reasons to attempt a more unconventional style of video, for example:

- Aiming for an unconventional style of music video brings originality and fresh ideas to the video which will help us achieve a higher mark, a give us more freedom in our work.

- Working with strange scenes and shots appears to be more interesting and surreal as apposed to just working with a conventional music video.

- There is a lot of freedom by doing this type of video in the sense that we can mix narrative and performance more easily and include extremely different shots to other groups. The shots will still fit in to the video because of how unconventional our music video will hopefully be.

We feel that the possibilities are rather limited when aiming to a conventional music video, it has to fit certain requirements, such as a very definite balance of performance and narrative. In the style we have chosen, there are no limits as to what we can do, we have the freedom to create an original and strangely entertaining piece.

Music Video Analysis 3

Ed Sheeran - You need me I don’t need you

The video is mainly performance, mainly focusing on someone signing the lyrics to the song. The video is in black and white and has minimalist props. I fact most of the music video is just the person signing in a white room with black shadow around him but he is lit up.
Unlike most music videos it is quite slow cut mainly because the focus is on the man signing it occasional zooms out or changes camera angle, is well at certain lyrics cut to something the relates to the lyric. Also during the chorus and during some instrumental parts, in the same room with the same lighting there is a group of choreographed dancers.
The fact he is signing in the video is unique in itself, it is never really seen in any music video, this means it is more or less all performance. However it could be argues that there is narrative as he is signing all the words, so in a sense he is telling the song. It is also worth adding that this is enhanced by the lyrics are quite literal and almost like narrative on his life.
Also unlike most music videos there is the ‘star element’ to the song, as the singer only appears once right at the end of the song with occasional cuts to his guitar, but not many. The main performer is the signer and they he performs is by signing to a rhythm as well has making it look like a dance.
There isn’t really anything that I’m aware of that is influenced the video. It is pretty original in its own right. The video is very different to most videos having very little stereotypical elements, only really in the dancers, which are seen in many videos, and the performance elements. This video it’s literately a illustration of the song as all that happens is the signer copying the lyrics.

Music Video Analysis 2.

Music Video Analysis 2
Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend
This video is fully performance and is amazingly all shot in one take. Although we would not do a video in one take, because of how complex and difficult it can be, we found this video good to analyze, as it was stunning that there were no cuts. This video also has good mis-en-scene, and performance elements. Another problem with videos that adopt a one-take stance is that it is impossible to have a narrative running alongside performance, and this is the aim of our music video as a group.
Nevertheless, the performance in this video is extraordinary. It features Robyn, the artist, dancing non-stop, in a mixed sequence for a full three and a half minutes. Strobe lighting and flashes that give a disco-like effect compliment her dance routine, and the movement of the camera to and from her face stops the video being repetitive and becoming boring. The medium shots that capture the top half of her body give focus to her facial expressions; however, the long shots that show her whole body are more effective as they display all of the movements in her dance routine.
The video starts with an over the shoulder shot. This is interesting, as it doesn’t reveal the artist’s face straight away, giving that little bit more originality to the video. As the speed of the music picks up into a more techno-like beat, the dance also increases in fluency and more moves are being used in a shorter space of time, the lighting also fits the pace of the song, with more flashes as the video becomes quicker. In order to keep Robyn the central importance of the video, the camera moves in unique positions, with her dance routines taking to the floor, then within seconds into the air as she jumps and bounces, showing a good sense of camerawork.
The originality of the video, with it being one take ect, is matched by Robyn’s clothes, with flowery pants and a jumper made of fur, there is a quite contemporary feel to the video. The mis-en-scene, performance and lighting of this particular music video can only be described as arty, energetic, and vibrant, but no matter what moves Robyn pulls out, there is always a very original feel to the video. It doesn’t seem to matter that the video only consists of Robyn dancing, it never seems to get boring, and really does capture the audience. There is also no doubt that the video has a feel good atmosphere to it, just watching a young woman dancing however she wants to such a good song makes watchers feel cheerful.

Music Video Analysis 1
The Prodigy – Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix)
This video is mainly a narrative with very little performance. The narrative is strange, and although the scenes are cut to the beat of the track, it could be said that the narrative has nothing to do with the song or in fact its title. The genre of the track is dance/house. And the video has a small amount of conventional features making it an original piece in its own way. There is a crowd of young adults running through an urban area. Blindfolded, with other men taking bets suggesting there is a race going on. There is also an old man taking pictures of the runners, but little is revealed about him connoting mystery and danger.
There are plenty of close ups of the mysterious man showing there is something being hidden about his character. The fact that the other people in the video are consistently in a group suggests they are not of great importance as individuals. However at the end of the video, a woman from the crowd emerges as a winner, and the group remove their blindfolds to find their fellow runners have collided with obstacles and fallen unlucky, this marks the end of the video. The beats are in perfect unison with the cuts in the video making typical of how music videos are produced.
The music speed is based on the tune because the track builds up and as the this happens the music and performance get faster. For example the people start running when the music drops at its fastest point. The camera work is clever because when the people are running it is as if the cameraman is running too, the camera is not shaky but is certainly moving. The camera is kept steady for the rest of the shots. The song is called ‘Voodoo People’ because it appears that the people running are being controlled. The lighting used throughout is kept quite dark which connotes mystery and gives an eerie effect. This also hides the characters true colours, keeping the audience intrigued.
This particular video is the Pendulum remix to the song, which gives it more of a beat and dance-like effect. The original video caused a lot of controversy because in the video there were real witch doctors and a real voodoo priest, which deemed horrific and too offensive to be shown. The music video is based on a scene from the Spanish film ‘Intacto’, which was themed around luck games and chance.
