location-1

We chose volcrepe warehouse in Glossop, as a location representation of the protagonist’s head. We chose this because our idea is the protagonist head is all messed up and falling apart. This warehouse was an ideal location as it was closed down and there was lots of rubble and various locations we could shoot to give the idea of confusion in the protagonists head with the added element of the ‘lunatic’ there as well. We chose this idea as it relates to the lyrics of the song and we have tried to represent as well as possible that this is the inside of someone’s head.

Music Video Research-Costume

Costume
Firstly the main female protagonist character is a young woman with a serious mental illness. I feel in order to show this with her clothing/costume she should have messy dirty hair with small bits in it from a leaf on it. There would be dried mascara on her cheek that had dripped down to show that she has been crying. This would also make the viewer mildly sympathise with the character because she clearly has been upset for time. Also, this character will also be wearing a dress with dirt marks and leaves on it. She should be wearing a dress with rips and a few dirt marks on it. Overall this costume will show how the female protagonist does not care about her appearance, and that she is not in the right state of mind.

Here is an example of what the female protagonist will look like. She would be wearing a worn out white dress and wear boots. Her hair would be messy and she would have makeup running down her face.

Also, throughout the music video there will be a contemporary rock band performing the song. I feel they should wear normal smart casual trendy clothing as this is what a lot of popular rock bands wear today in their music videos, for example ‘Kings Of Leon’. These bands usually wear jeans, black shoes or indie styled trainers (converse) and a stylish t-shirt or shirt. The band that originally sang the song, ‘Pink Floyd’ had a different clothing style to most contemporary rock bands today, mainly because they were active in the 1970s. A band from the 1970s would wear jeans, a jumper and black shoes. So, ideally the clothes from the different bands, from the different decades are still quite similar, they tend to wear that time’s latest fashion trend. Overall, it would be more appropriate if the band wore clothes similar to rock bands today than a band from the 1970s.

Brain Damage-Pink Floyd

Duration: 3 minutes 55 seconds

Audience: The main target audience for this music video is 17-30 year olds who enjoy rock genre music, mainly because it is an expressive song with deep lyrics mainly to do with mental illness. We feel this audience would appreciate the meaningful visual performance and easily realize its connection with the song. Additional to that, because the song is by a rock band from the 1970’s (Pink Floyd), an older audience may appeal to the music video. I feel even though Pink Floyd’s fan base would majority just be males, I feel because our video consists of a female protagonist character, this may appeal to the female audience. The unconventional style and images in our video could make it hard for young children to understand, and also may be seen as disturbing as we aim to achieve a video with strange and deep images.

Resume: The narrative shows a mentally disturbed young woman in raggedy clothing waking up in a public park and then soon makes her way to an abandoned building where she supposedly commits suicide. The band that was shown performing throughout then sees the lead singer collapse randomly and the music immediately stops.

Suggested Elements: In terms of performance, we hope to include a green screen behind the band when they are performing. We aim to include realistic acting in terms of the woman in the park and abandoned building, as we want to achieve a serious and unconventional video, with disturbing elements as opposed to a less serious video. The costumes in our video will be pivotal in making our video unconventional, the woman in the park will be wearing a white gown, and boots, as if she has come form an asylum, she will look rough, rugged and senseless. We may include some make up in order to suggest she is ill, and add to the idea that there is something not quite right about the woman. Location is also a major part of our video in contributing the unconventional style we want to portray. We have chosen an abandoned warehouse in Glossop, Derbyshire. This will give us a good location to get shots of the woman in isolated and secluded places, which will show she has nobody and is almost, trapped in her own mind. We have not decided which park, but we will also be shooting the beginning of the video in a grassy area where there are lots of trees, so the woman can lie on the grass. It is important we choose the correct places, yet strange settings with the right elements in order to show the mental fragility of the woman.

Recording Days: We hope to record in Glossop on Friday 14th of October 2011, early in the morning to the afternoon so we have the correct lighting for our shots. We will get a train to Glossop from Manchester Piccadilly, which will take 40 minutes, then walk to the desired location. The park shots will hopefully be recorded on Tuesday 18th October 2011 meaning the vast majority of our filming will be finished before half-term. This leaves us nearly the whole of November to edit our video and make it as professional as possible. The postproduction of our piece will be vital in achieving the video quality we want and so it is important we spend a fair amount of time doing the editing, sound and light effects and others.

Music Video Analyis 4: Relevant Video.

This song relates to the song we have chosen to do our music video to as it has areas of performance and also uses green screen throughout. This song is also the same genre as the Pink Floyd song we have chosen to do, making it relevant.

Music Video Analysis 4

Kings of Leon – Molly’s Chambers

The video starts off with the band performing against a green screen, with a variety of arty elements changing colors and moving through different shots. The camerawork is also clever as the shots switch back and forth creating a re-winding and fast-forwarding effect.
The shots also cross over reach other, which achieves an original style of presenting the performance sections of the video. Although our video will have lots of narrative features and not as much performance as this particular song, this video has lots of ideas that have inspired how we aim to present the performance part of our video. We have talked about green screening because we can edit our video to have a wide variety of colors, making the video original. This also allows us to add our creative imagery to the performance side of our music video.
The long shots of the band in this particular video are extremely effective because it hides the identity of the band, then suddenly there will be several close ups in a row which creates a number of interesting angles of the band. As the music picks up speed, the shots of the band change quicker and quicker and the cuts come in such a fast succession there is a sense of uniqueness about the video.
The end of the video is very interesting, because the shots are put into small squares which zoom further away from the camera, and as they move away it is clear that and X shape is being created by the small squares, which is very unconventional, in my view, making the video interesting and fresh.
Although it looks like there is not a lot narrative in this video, it could be said that this is not the case because there are hundreds of different facial expressions pulled by the members of the bands. There are also a lot of moves which they include while they are playing heir instruments which could be seen as some narrative. There is also a very professional look to this video, as the cuts of the music are perfectly in line with music and the performance that is important. We aim to achieve this to as it will give us a better chance of getting a high mark, because the more professional our video looks the better.
The variety of colors, shots, speed and angles in this video makes it an unconventional video, which even people who don’t like the music can enjoy.

Song Choice & Interpretation

Lyrics for our song with Brief Analysis- Pink Floyd - Brain Damage:

The lunatic is on the grass.
The lunatic is on the grass.
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs.
Got to keep the loonies on the path.

The lunatic is in the hall.
The lunatics are in my hall.
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more.

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

The lunatic is in my head.
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane.
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

My interpretation of this song is that it contains themes of insanity, entrapment and death which is not common in many songs today. I feel the song speaks about a person with a voice or person in his head that is making him go insane. Throughout I feel the main character tries to fight the voices in his head eg: "Got to keep the loonies on the path" (meaning got to stay in control of myself). He eventually, it seems loses to the voices/person in his head and either goes insane or commits suicide. And in this case '...the dark side of the moon...', which is repeated throughout is either a mental health hospital or death. I would like to show this interpretation in my music video as doing this will help the viewer understand Pink Floyd's lyrics and its intentions better in the song.

Song Choice

We have decided on the song we are going to do a video for -

Pink Floyd - Brain Damage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwNYqHRHUOQ

This song is about insanity, leaving our options open as to what narrative we take, and also creating the opportunity to use a variety of strange and different shots. This will help us reach our aim of making an unconventional music video.
